Im planning on buying my first car and the two i like are the same model. there is an 87 gmc jimmy (FOR SALE BY A DEALER) which is in perfect condition and the inside looks really great, no lift and stock tires however.

the other is an 89 gmc jimmy (for sale by owner) but has some internal problems like the carpet has stains and tares, and the foam on the dash is corroded and you can easily poke a hole through it, but it has a 6" lift with 35" tires.

i was wondering if i should buy the first one and put a 6" lift kit on it and a good set of 35" tires on it and how much that might cost. Or if i should get the second one and get the dash board and carpet fixed and how much that might cost.

    thanks for the help

    Hi,

if you look only at costs, it will be cheaper to buy the '89 and change the carpets and the dash foam. And you'd end up with a more recent vehicle.

The only issue may be that if the '89 already has 35' wheels and and a 6" lift, it probably already went a lot offroad and may have suffered from it, you should check it carefully...

    Cheers

I agree with El Diablo, If I was the owner of that truck I KNOW I done some playing in it. There could be more damage than just the interior of the cab.

Has anything been needed to be re-welded on? I know a funny question but it's happened, I've seen it.

The differencial may be wore quite a bit too. If it's a stick shift (I'm not familiar with the Jimmy) you should drive it, and make sure there is no extreme or real noticable heat coming from the shift boot. If there is, could just need more lube in the transmission, or something could be cooking up some trouble.

Maybe all it needs is just a tune-up?

As with buying a lift kit or 35" tires. I purchased 35"s for about $150 each. Lift kits your looking about the same.
